Let our new adventure begin ❤️
At Taughmonagh Primary School and Nursery Unit, we recognise and value the importance of our staff to ensure a high and effective learning experience for our children.
We incorporate as much as possible, time for staff to build positive working relationships, time away from a screen and to simply enjoy ourselves.
We also have treat days of tea, coffee, buns, sandwiches to keep our energy levels high throughout the day.
Our school has a dedicated Health and Well Being Room to support staff in time of need.
Taughmonagh Primary School and Nursery Unit is a Nurture School.
We have a Sunshine room with a fully trained teacher and classroom assistant.
We follow the Principles of Nurture across our whole school with all staff receiving training in this field.
Shared Education
Taughmonagh Primary School and Nursery Unit hold a partnership with Harberton School as part of our Shared Education Programme. Mrs Roberts leads this initiative.
Roots of Empathy
Primary Six pupils complete the Roots of Empathy programme alongside Miss Mairs weekly. Pupils develop the knowledge of growth, nurture, understanding and relationships throughout this programme. At the end of the programme the pupils hold a celebration with our 'baby' and review the development the 'baby' has had in their time with it.
School of Sanctuary
In June 2024. we were delighted to become a School of Sanctuary. This enables our school to create an ethos based on cultural understanding and respect.
We are delighted to have our very own ECO TEAM at Taughmonagh Primary School who oversee all areas of ECO in our school.
Our School Council provides representatives from across the school to meet and have an input into the daily running of the school.
Our pupils take great pride in Taughmonagh Primary School and always have great ideas and suggestions.
Play Therapy
Miss Mairs is a qualified Play Therapist. Pupils have the opportunity to engage in a play therapy programme to support their emotional health and well being.
We have a dedicated play therapy room as well as a dedicated staff health and well being room which is also used by our School Counsellor.
All staff have completed their Trauma Informed Practice Training to ensure we are equipped and have the knowledge to understand the feelings of pupils who experience Trauma.
In Taughmonagh Primary School we have been using Numicon as part of our numeracy lessons from Nursery to P5 and in our Speech and Language Unit for the past 3 years. It gives children a visual, concrete resource to help them visualise numbers and shapes, to add, subtract, count, explore pattern, investigate tables, fractions and decimals.
It provides the children with a firm foundation on which to build their mathematical vocabulary and understanding that can then begin to transfer into their written work (the pictorial and abstract aspect of their learning). This then increases their understanding when moving into Upper KS2. The Numicon approach enables children to form relationships between numbers using shapes, rods, pegs and baseboards to see patterns which they are then able to continue on, giving the children strategies to apply and work out answers.
We have also recently invested in the Numicon Intervention Programme training for some members of staff to enable them to assess children to identify gaps in their learning. We then use the information gathered to design a tailor made programme to ‘fill these gaps’ in ½ hour sessions 3 to 4 times per week for 12 weeks as an intensive intervention in order to push children further towards expectations according to their ability.
