Speech and Language Unit

We have three permanent Speech and Language Unit classes and one temporary (June 2025) class. These classes are fully integrated into the life of Taughmonagh Primary School and Nursery Unit.

The units are funded by the Education Authority/Department of Education and focus on the Northern Ireland Curriculum, alongside those pupils who have a statement indicating a Speech and Language disorder.

On site, we have two Speech and Language Therapists, who support our pupils in their development. This is via withdrawal sessions, communication passports and upskilling staff to transfer therapy work into the classroom.

We promote Makaton across all our classes to ensure a consistent approach to communication. We also include visual schedules/timetables to support daily routine.

As school, we take opportunities to celebrate individuality through for example, DLD (whole school) Awareness Day.

The Speech and Language Unit holds a Toy and Book Library on the first week of each month. This welcomes Parents into our school to work with their child in the school environment.
